Internship Program

The Cape Atlantic Conservation District, in partnership with Stockton University, offers an ongoing internship program that provides students with hands-on experience in conservation and natural resource management.

This program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical skills and professional insight into soil and water conservation, stormwater management, and public education while earning academic credit.

What Interns Will Learn

Our internship program is structured to provide meaningful, real-world experience in the following areas:

analyzing construction plans, specifically drainage, grading, and soil erosion control

1. Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Program

Interns will work closely with the District’s Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Program, which ensures that construction projects comply with regulations to minimize environmental impact. Activities include:

  • Interpreting aerial photography.
  • Reading and analyzing construction plans, specifically drainage, grading, and soil erosion control.
  • Conducting field inspections and gaining hands-on experience with compliance procedures.
  • Assisting with various GIS mapping projects, helping to create detailed maps for conservation planning.

2. Stormwater Management Basin Database

As part of a statewide initiative in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), New Jersey Department of Agriculture, and local Soil Conservation Districts, interns will:

  • Enter Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data into a standardized reporting system.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of previously constructed and newly developed stormwater basins to evaluate their functionality for improving water quality.
  • Learn about the latest construction techniques and gain insight into how stormwater management impacts environmental health.

3. District Education Programs

Interns will contribute to the District’s educational outreach by assisting with:

Engaging with the public through outreach efforts that inspire conservation awareness and action.

Developing grants, presentations, and public displays to promote conservation initiatives.

Supporting workshops focused on pollinator and wildlife habitat projects, soil and water conservation, and other natural resource management topics.

Program Details

  • Academic Credit: This internship is a 4-credit course, allowing students to integrate their learning experience into their spring or fall semester schedule.
  • Time Commitment: Interns are expected to dedicate a minimum of 10–12 hours per week during the semester.
  • Stipend: Each intern will receive a $750 tuition reimbursement stipend upon the successful completion of the program.
