The Cape Atlantic Conservation District is proud to be part of the upcoming Pinelands Summer Short Course on July 18, 2025, at Stockton University’s Kramer Hall in Hammonton, NJ.
This engaging event offers a full day of learning and hands-on experiences, bringing together conservation enthusiasts, educators, and community members to explore the unique natural and cultural resources of New Jersey’s treasured Pinelands.
What is the Pinelands Summer Short Course?
The Pinelands Summer Short Course, co-sponsored by the New Jersey Pinelands Commission and the Stockton Center on Successful Aging, is an annual event designed to increase public awareness of the Pinelands and its ecological and cultural significance. The day features a mix of educational presentations and guided field trips that highlight the region’s natural beauty, history, and ongoing conservation efforts.
This year’s program includes 11 classroom presentations and 4 field trips, covering topics from prehistoric New Jersey life to modern forest management, Pine Barrens wildlife, and even the art of basketmaking with natural materials.
The Cape Atlantic Conservation District’s Contribution: Forestry 101
We’re excited to highlight the District’s own Forestry 101: An Introduction session, presented by John Hooven, CCF, Cape Atlantic Conservation District Forester. This class offers an accessible introduction to forestry for anyone interested in the vital role of forests and the basics of managing them for health and sustainability.
Topics will include:
- What is forestry and why it matters
- An overview of New Jersey’s unique forest ecosystems
- Basic forest measurements and monitoring
- How active management can maintain forest health and reduce risks such as wildfire and disease
This session aligns with the District’s ongoing work to support communities and landowners in responsibly managing forest resources, helping ensure that our woodlands remain healthy, safe, and resilient for generations to come.
